Cheu Fishtown: Asian Fusion & Funky Decor

This uniquely funky spot located at 1416 Frankford Ave has some of the best Asian fusion dishes we’ve ever tasted. Now if you’re not paying attention, you might walk right past Cheu Fishtown because of the cool design of the building. The brick building and bright red door make it look like it’s a firehouse, but once you walk in, the funky wall art by artist @_sheryo immediately catches your eye. They have been open for about two years, and they are making a mark in the new up and coming Fishtown area.

We arrived a little after 3 pm, so the happy hour menu was in full effect, so we definitely wanted to try a few things off of it.

We started with the Corn Rangoons – goat cheese, jalapeno with a side of sweet & sour sauce. We also had the Green Curry Chicken Wontons- daikon, peanut, and crispy onion. Both of these dishes were great starters; it excited us for the next dishes to come.

For our next options, we let our server choose, and bring out a few customer favorites. Here is what she brought us:
Watermelon Salad- silken tofu, pickled chili, Chinese black bean and yuzu 10.

Pastrami Bing- sauerkraut, swiss and pastrami. On top were poppy seeds, scallions, and thousand island dressing. I thought the thousand island dressing was going to be overwhelming, but it wasn’t at all.

Brisket Ramen- beef and chicken sesame red chili broth, ramen noodles, matzo ball, scallion, kimchi and a brisket that was cooked to perfection.

Lamb Ho Fun- fresh thick cut rice noodles, chili garlic dressing mixed with scallions, green onions, cilantro, spring greens, cucumbers, and tahini. This dish had a refreshing bitter taste, but it paired very well with all of the other ingredients. There was a lot of meat in this dish; it reminded me of the inside of lasagna. Super tasty.

We were so stuffed after all of that great food, and the decor was so impressive that we decided to sit there for a while and take it all in. While we were wrapping up the meal, the GM Ben came over to stay hello and we ended up having a great conversation about our experience and the new restaurant the owners were opening next door called NuNu. Both restaurants will share an outside space right in between them, but NuNu will focus heavily on cocktails and small dishes.

It was awesome getting a chance to chat with Ben, and we were super excited about the news of the new restaurant. We are excited to visit again for the opening of the new restaurant, but we will definitely be back to eat at Cheu Fishtown again!
