What is Live N’ Colour? Is it a fete? A rave? Exhilarating fun, sheer pandemonium and a non stop 10 hour party is probably the best way to describe it. It’s the time of year where thousands of people come together on Pigeon Island Islet of St. Lucia to party all night and into the morning.
The event began in 2014 and the concept is based on “The Holi Festival” of Colours in India. Each year, the people in India would welcome Spring with this festival, celebrating the triumph of good over evil, as well as, promote the bridging of social gaps and restoring social relationships. The people would literally jump around and dance, throwing colorful powder into the sky and onto one another. The thought was that during this time, all differences between religion, castes, etc become invisible as everyone is united in celebration and covered in the same vibrant colors.
Mix this Indian tradition with the Caribbean spirit of Carnival and you get Live N’ Colour. You can expect good vibes, great music, liquor, and a non-stop all night celebration. Oh yea, and you WILL get messy.
I showed up not fully knowing what to expect. As the final event of the carnival season, Live N’ Colour is scheduled to take place from 12am – 10am. You can purchase tickets in advance or buy them at the door. There were also scalpers outside trying to sell tickets but there prices are obviously higher than the regular ticket prices. We purchased our tickets from the ticket office beside the entrance for $100 EC or $37 USD.
Inside were thousands of party goers, music blasting, and paint everywhere. Coolers filled with alcohol and sodas were scattered throughout the area next to energetic party goers. There were huge towers positioned throughout the area that sprayed water everywhere, adding to the party atmosphere. Bags of opened and unopened powder littered ground as more bags were thrown from the stage or from the huge towers spraying water. People would rush to graph these bags, only to throw them in the air or onto other party goers.
The music alternated from DJ sets to DJs with a hype man to live performances. The music consisted of everything from soca, to electro-dance, to dancehall, and more…whatever would keep the party going. And the party definitely kept going, lasting for an astounding 10 hours.
As the sun came up, you began to better see the paint stained faces and clothing of the party goers, but they didn’t slow down one bit. Dancing continued and at one point I saw a few people that had climbed the towers and were dancing while hanging from those very same towers.
At around 10am, the party slowly started to draw to a close. People began to leave the park, stained in paint, or made their way to the beach for a dip in the ocean to wash off what they could. Live N’ Colour can only be described as a fete combined with an all night rave. If you have an opportunity to experience this while in St. Lucia, you should put this on your list of things to do. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
How To Get There
Live N’ Colour is located on Pigeon Island Beach. Anyone going out that night will probably be headed to the same event. The easiest way to get there is by taxi. The taxi will drop you off as close to the entrance as possible and you will have to walk from there. Be sure to have a ride home planned after the event, as it doesn’t end until around 10am. You can also take the bus to Pigeon Island Beach as well.
What To Bring
You WILL get messy when attending this event. Be it from the paint, the water spraying from the fountains, or maybe someone stomping in the mud, it’s inevitable. With that said, wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or, more so, that you don’t mind throwing away afterward. This includes shoes as well. For guys, a simple T-shirt or tank top and shorts will do. If you didn’t pack any “throw away” attire, head to town and pick up a cheap shirt from one of the many vendors. Ladies can opt to wear the same or show some skin, which many often do. Also, women often were seen wearing shower caps, as they said the paint can sometimes be a pain to get out of your hair, especially if you have braids or dreadlocks.
Live N’ Colour is bring your own liquor, so you’re welcome to bring a cooler or a backpack with your favorite beverages. However, no glass bottles are allowed so you’ll have to transfer your alcohol to plastic bottles before entering the venue. I’d recommend filling a bottled water or soda bottle with your favorite alcohol and bringing along the chaser of your choice.
