While in Jacksonville Florida working with one of our partner properties, Sonesta Jacksonville ES, I had the opportunity to have lunch at one of the oldest breweries in Jacksonville, the River City Brewing Company. Great food, best micro-brews, and a fantastic view!
When I first walked in, I felt like I was on a ship, the decor had a very classy sailor vibe. The main dining area overlooked the beautiful St. John’s River and the downtown Jacksonville skyline.
Our waitress, a Jacksonville native, was very kind and extremely knowledgeable about the Jacksonville area. She is a veteran waitress at the restaurant so she had the menu memorized. She started us off with the Southbank Wings, eight wings tossed in your choice of hot, spicy honey mustard, chipotle bacon, soy chili or ranch. Another really delicious starter that she brought out was their highly requested Fried Green Tomatoes. Classic cornmeal crusted green tomatoes with bleu cheese dressing topped with bacon jam. The best fried green tomatoes I have ever had! I mean it was like they hand-picked the best tomatoes for this dish.
For the 2nd course, she brought out two of their famous dishes, Fish and Chips and Shrimp and Grits. The Fish and Chips, red rooster battered haddock fillets served with golden french fries and tartar sauce. The Shrimp and Grits, seven jumbo shrimp with smoked gouda grits and Kentucky Bourbon Beer braised greens. The greens are three different greens combined; kale, spinach and mustard greens. The final ingredient, a bacon jam to top the dish off, such a great touch.
After these four delicious dishes, we were stuffed! We didn’t have any more space left for dessert, but the menu does offer so many different dishes created with global flavor and culinary expertise. So, If you’re ever in Jacksonville, this restaurant is definitely a must.
