The Color Purple! Another fantastic performance at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, located at 2700 F Street, NW Washington, DC 20566. The Color Purple is the 2016 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival! Directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, with a soul-raising, Grammy Award-winning score of jazz, gospel, ragtime, and blues, The Color Purple stage play perfectly showcases the exhilarating spirit of this Pulitzer Prize-winning story.
Congratulations to the cast of this amazing stage play! What a fantastic performance and a successful evening. No recordings or flash photography of any kind was permitted during the show so I could not capture the beautiful singing voices of the crew members, but I was ok with that rule because it gave me the opportunity to focus and enjoy every second of the play.
The play was very similar to the movie, with a few subtractions to keep the length reasonable but there were also some great additions that fit exceptionally well in the flow of the play. The play was powerful with some amazing African American female leads, Girl Power! It made me laugh, and there were moments that I cried, but I spent most of the time clapping and cheering, which was the consensus in the whole theater.
Everybody was on the edge of their seats waiting to hear those famous lines we all grew up memorizing:
Sofia: “But I’ll kill him dead ‘fo I let him beat me!”
Celie: “The grave you dig for me is the one you’re gonna rot in!”
Celie: “Everything you done to me, already been done to you.”
Shug Avery: “I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don’t notice it.”
You could hear the whole audience saying each line out loud with each cast member.
This was my first stage play, and it was such a memorable experience. If you’ve seen the movie, you are going to love this play. If you haven’t seen the movie, you will still enjoy this play. It was not too long and not too short, it was just right, especially for people like me that are 1st timers.
The Color Purple will be at The Kennedy Center until August 26th so make sure you check it out! Click HERE to check out the stage plays calendar for the upcoming showtimes.
Thank you to the Kennedy Center for another great press partnership opportunity. There are so many great things happening at the Kennedy Center, I always have a blast! Visit their website for all upcoming shows and activities.
