The Rooster: Our Favorite Jewish-Style Diner

Another stop on our Philly food adventures was this cute little diner called The Rooster, located at 1526 Sansom St. Ok, so picture one of those old fashioned diners with the long counter where you can sit and eat, the diner that always has the best pies. Well, this diner was precisely that!

What I liked the most is they donate 100% of their profits to support vulnerable Philadelphians through Broad Street Ministry’s Hospitality Collaborative, so we definitely wanted to help shed light on this great initiative.

Sean, the manager and acting bartender for the day, greeted us as soon as we walked in and got us seated so we could start trying things out off of the menu. We kicked the tasting off with the Bruleed Grapefruit off of the Brunch menu that had a sweet layer of sugar perfectly bruleed on top. That layer masked the tartness of the grapefruit, it was very refreshing with a hint of sweetness.

Next, we had the Cornmeal Waffle, which had peach jam and pistachios on top. It was not super sweet at all and it was topped with light whip cream made with cream and yogurt.

The Yemenite Matzo Ball Soup was up next. Made with chicken broth a Hawaij spice blend, turmeric, black pepper, cilantro, onion, and celery.

We also tried the Hot Corned Beef on Rye served french fries and pickles. House-made corned beef on house rye with little yellow mustard.

The Chopped Salad is a popular dish on the menu, so we decided to try that out also. Cucumber, tomato chickpeas, feta, olives and Za’atar Vinaigrette. The manager says the best way to describe this salad is, an Israeli antipasto.

To wrap-up, it was only right to get a slice of pie, the Blueberry Crumb Pie. They switch pies out seasonally, but because I am a huge fan of anything blueberry, I think we came during the best season. The pie crust, baked perfectly, sweet but not too sweet. It was so good that a slice of pie and a cup of coffee would have probably been enough for me. The whole menu has some great options, so you can’t go wrong with anything you choose. If you are in the area, please stop by!
